What IS a Resume?

Okay, so you get the point of what we're writing, sure... but here's a question that some are asking - but not out loud:
What IS a Resume'?
Don't worry - we won't rat you out.

That there is the basis of a resume'. Definition? Was waiting for you to ask.

ré·su·mé
 /ˈrɛzʊˌmeɪ, ˌrɛzʊˈmeɪ/ Show Spelled[rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey]
–noun
1. a summing up; summary.
2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. (Dictionary.com)

A résumé (pronounced /ˈrɛzʊmeɪ/ REZ-oo-may or /rɛzʊˈmeɪ/; French: [ʁezyme]; sometimes spelled resumé or resume) is a document used by individuals to present their background and skill sets. Résumés can be used for a variety of reasons but most often to secure new employment. A typical résumé contains a summary of relevant job experience and education. The résumé is typically one of the first items, along with a cover letter and sometimes job application packet that a potential employer encounters regarding the job seeker and is typically used to screen applicants, often followed by an interview, when seeking employment… [Wiki.]

So, with all that shown and told, let's tie it all together.

The point of a resume is to showcase, on paper, that you're able to perform certain duties and tasks. "The Resume." does the same thing. There are first impressions that you know you wish you could have back - relationships, employment, whatever. Fumbled words, unneeded statements, awkward pauses - the list goes on. Some go for the 'unique' pick-up lines or icebreakers... don't leave the best impression, do they. Others just lay it all out there and cross fingers that the other person feels the exact same way. Works? Sure. Often? No.

Just like with taking a stab at employment: not everyone is great at talking about themselves. Give the interviewer something to talk about. Same with that cutie with the killer smile... you might be a big puddle of mush, but maybe you'll snap out of it after they ask you about your qualifications. The gaze of their eyes might not burn you so deeply in your soul if there's a piece of paper in the way.

Hey... nothing's perfect. So is life. "The Resume." - it might surprise you.
